The Big Dictionary of Dreams

by Martha Clarke
The island is associated with ideas of salvation and refuge, in the case that it is a pleasant dream. On the other hand, an island can become a prison because of the isolation it produces. In general, the island demonstrates a desire to flee from reality, as well as the individualism of everyone.

If you are isolated on the island, you should try to analyze your feelings from other perspectives, since everything indicates that you don’t count on others when making decisions. Keeping in mind that the ocean symbolizes the unconscious mind, the island can signify the desire to stay safe in the conscious Self rather than wanting to investigate your interior. The sea, according to Freud’s studies, also symbolizes the mother figure. This dream, therefore, could be showing your maternal-filial relationship.

If the island is swallowed by water, it may mean that you feel pressured by an overly strict mother or by the lack of control of your unconscious forces. (See ARMOR, CASTILLE, ABANDONMENT, WATER and HERMIT)

In respect to this dream, oracles predict comfort and favorable circumstances.

Vision: In a man’s dream, the island stands for frustration at work; you arc anxious to be involved, to create something new, to make use of your pioneer spirit. Or you are simply stressed out and want to (or should) take a break from your hectic lifestyle. When you return—maybe from a vacation— you can again set the world on fire. Being alone on an island: you want to be left alone or feel lonely. Seeing an abandoned island: you are traveling in uncharted waters—or you have no clue where to go from here.

Depth Psychology: An island reflects fear about the responsibilities of life and—in that sense—is an attempt to take flight from reality (or to retreat from the world). Sometimes it might simply be a matter of needing some peace and solitude after a particularly hectic period.

The dream can also be a warning about not isolating or withdrawing.
