Once a symbol for marriage, because the fire in the hearth was lit in a ritual ceremony with a torch. Then it became a symbol of passing on psychic energies and ideas (Olympic torch); the light of reason and freedom (Statue of Liberty). Today, however, it is more a symbol of light and consciousness that penetrates the dark (that which is not understood). Also, a symbol of honoring somebody (torchlight procession).
