The usable power of fire is in a very small window of the continuum on which it exists. A small fire does little more than look pretty. Just a little too much, though, and the danger is life threatening and enormously destructive. A fireplace is the organizing principle around which great power can be harnessed to accomplish a very specific goal.

The original use of a fireplace was as a household tool. The hearth was the center of a home, providing both protective warmth and facilitating the nurturance of the family through cooking food.
