Dream Sight: A Dictionary and Guide for Interpreting Any Dream
by Dr. Michael LennoxDreaming Lens: Were you vomiting or was someone else? Did you make yourself vomit or was it involuntary? Were you aware of what was coming out of you? Was it food or something other than food? Was it painful and uncomfortable? How did you feel afterward?
Personal Focus: The body possesses a natural reflex for getting rid of something harmful that has entered the digestive system. This regulatory impulse senses the presence of toxins or poisons and triggers a muscular contraction to expel the unwanted material. While this can be caused by different stimulus from tainted food, viral infection, to self-inducement, the symbolic meaning is the same—getting rid of something that is perceived to be bad.
Because of the connection between vomit and food, this image will always have something to do with nurturance and self-care. If it shows up in a dream, there is something amiss in how you are being nurtured. This may signal a period in life where you are pushing away the nurturing you need. The other side of this could be a need to reject the nurturing habits or relationships in your life that might be unhealthy. Vomiting could also signal the purging of previously unexpressed feelings that have been stuffed down for too long. Since vomiting is a primal reflex, this could hearken back to patterns established early in life. On a positive note, this reflex is associated with the body caring for itself, so vomiting in a dream could point to instincts that protect you and keep you safe.
If the vomiting has been purposefully induced, as in bulimia, you are dealing with an attempt to control the expression of feelings. Not wanting to take in food could connect to a desire to reject some thought or idea in your waking life. Examine how well you are caring for yourself, including accepting the behavior and words of others. If you have to “swallow something” that doesn’t agree with you, you may find yourself vomiting those ideas right back up in your dreams.
