Dream Sight: A Dictionary and Guide for Interpreting Any Dream
by Dr. Michael LennoxDreaming Lens: Were you having surgery in the dream? Had you, or someone else, already had a surgery? What type of surgery was it? Were you performing the surgery? If so, on whom? Was it excessively violent or scary? How was your recovery?
Personal Focus: Surgery is usually thought of as a painful and invasive procedure undertaken when some form of healing needs to take place. In its essence, it is a process that fundamentally alters the structure of some part of the body. Whether it is to remove something harmful, assist in recovery from trauma or enhance one’s appearance, the surgeon never leaves things as they were found. This makes the symbolic meaning connect to the alteration as the primary result of the surgery, and healing as secondary.
All surgeries can be categorized as either removing or adding something to the body. If something is being removed, begin your investigation in areas of your life where you are facing loss or release. If you are being surgically enhanced with new material such as replaced joints or a pacemaker, look to ways in which you are taking on new paths or ways of being that are currently foreign to you.
The area of the body involved will be prominent in your interpretation. If your organs and intestinal area are the site of a surgery, you are likely dreaming about issues around emotional expression. If bones and/or joints are involved, then what is being altered connects to the foundational structures that underlie your sense of self or belief systems. Brain surgery points to intellectual or thought-based changes, whereas heart surgery would imply shifting around the expression of love or passion. Plastic surgery deals with the more superficial elements of change.
No matter what the surgery is, there is an implication that some area in your consciousness requires dramatic healing. The healing that is taking place is big enough to warrant this image to express itself, which is a further indication that an alteration will be required if the healing is to be successful. As with all change, there may be pain and suffering. Most importantly, there will be a recovery period before the new way of being will be fully accessible to you.
