analysis of a dream
Alicia dreamed: “I used to have recurrent dreams in which terrifying snakes would appear. After these dreams, I would awaken drenched in sweat and nervous.
If it occurred at midnight I went to get a glass of water with the fear of finding a snake in the kitchen stalking me. During a certain time the dreams stopped, but, shortly after, they would return to repeat themselves in an even more violent manner.”
Alicia was raised in a very conservative family that forbade premarital relations. She maintained an amorous—though not sexual—relationship for three years, and during this time she was accosted by dreams of snakes. When the relationship ended, the dreams stopped; but later she fell in love again and felt sexually inhibited; therefore, the dreams of snakes returned with more intensity.
The snakes of her dreams were clearly a phallic symbol that were warning
her of her inability to enjoy her sexuality to the fullest, due to her education. When Alicia understood this, she started to confront her personal monster and prepare her path towards a satisfactory relationship. The dreams of snakes began to recede and when they occurred she tried not to distress herself and to understand their meaning.
