For obvious reasons, the ox is a symbol of sacrifice, suffering, patience, and work. It also indicates sure but slow actions, which can have both positive and negative connotations.

Symbol of physical strength—though docile and subjected to reason—the ox occupied in ancient Egyptian religion a key place: Apis, of bovine appearance, was the god of fertility.
