Four

The Four is where the change in the human personality takes place.

The number Four belongs to Uranus. Four-people want to revolutionize the world: they are scientists, clerics, social reformers, nonconformists, and artists. They brood, attack problems, and have a quick wit. Four analyv.es and organizes. It stands against the carefree mentality of the Three—having received the Divine one. Four-people have the clarity needed to understand the center, the “I,” and what holds life together. But a Four-person can also suffocate in this orderliness. Four-people have staying- power and willpower, as well as a tendency to be melancholy.

Generally speaking, the Four represents immense inner strength, energy, vitality, and a great love for and connection with nature. You are asked to either support and advance these qualities, or you need them in greater measure in order to fulfill your life’s work.

Four is an ancient symbol of completeness; wholeness. (The four comers of the earth, the four cardinal points, the four winds all, in primitive traditions, represent the whole of reality. So does a four-sided figure. The cross, too, extending in all four directions, is an ancient - pre-Christian - symbol of totality. Such figures, along with a four- petalled flower or four-lobed leaf, are mandalas, representing wholeness.)

According to Jung, consciousness has four functions: thinking, intuition, feeling and sensation. Usually, however, at least one of these and possibly three are undeveloped and are therefore still totally or partially unconscious. Personal fullness can be achieved only by lifting these functions out of unconsciousness and integrating them into consciousness.

Multiples of four - eight, sixteen and so on - may have the same symbolic meaning as four. To see such a symbol in your dream does not mean you have achieved personal wholeness; rather, your dream may be pointing out, by contrast, your lack of wholeness.

The four seasons, the phases of the moon, the four directions on a compass, particularly also the four elements—fire, air, earth, and water—the four limbs, the four functions of the conscience. Four creates order in chaos.

It is the symbol for becoming whole and becoming one, in contrast to Multiplicity.

For some Native Americans four is a holy number, the number for everything beautiful (for instance, in some traditions a prayer must be spoken four times). In alchemy the process of transformation happens in four stages. According to legend, the river in paradise separates into four rivers.

According to Jung, four always points out that we are on the way to becoming what we really are. Four symbolizes completeness and totality: the four temperaments and, in Christianity, the four directions of the Cross and Christ surrounded by four apostles.
