A Dictionary of Dream Symbols

by Eric Ackroyd
(1) A dwarf, being below normal size, may symbolize a stunted personality - in which case you need to utilize hitherto neglected / repressed parts of yourself.

(2) A dwarf may sometimes symbolize the true self, not yet (fully) manifest. Pay attention to subsequent dreams for further signals concerning the way to move closer to yourself (your self). (On self)

(In some primitive societies dwarfs were regarded with awe, as having extraordinary divine powers).

(3) Perhaps the dwarf / dwarfs take their symbolism from your association of dwarves with the Snow White story, in which they are miners, descending into the bowels of the earth and bringing up gold. This symbolizes a descent into the unconscious, the depths of the self, to discover the true nature of the self. Dwarfs may thus appear as guides on your quest for self-knowledge. Gold is a symbol of the true self. But what the dwarfs in your dreams are bringing up from your unconscious may be those qualities that you have at some earlier stage in your life rejected (for moral reasons, perhaps, or in order to concentrate on earning a living) but which you now need for the rounding out of your personality.

Dwarves tend to symbolize values like thoroughness, careful work, perseverance, etc. However, if in the dream you are the dwarf the meaning changes completely. The latter signals a very stark view of things; you might be limiting your potential. Your creativity, therefore is underutilized.

Gold symbolizes our true self and, as in Snow White’s story, the dwarfs extract it from the mine. So, this image can also represent the search for self- knowledge. To see your friends dwarfed predicts good health for them and a great joy from living with them.

If in your dream dwarfs appear ugly and malformed, the outcome is disaster.

At times people will see dwarfs, midgets, or very small people in their dreams. These images seem to represent, or allude to, the childlike creative powers in the unconscious. You can think of the dwarf as a “worker” in your unconscious. He could represent some childlike condition which has the potential and power to influence your life. Consider the details and the emotional tone in the dream and make an attempt to connect it to a situation in your daily life.

The dwarf suggests possibilities for learning and brings to the conscious mind messages from the unconscious.
