A Dictionary of Dream Symbols

by Eric Ackroyd
(1) Much depends on your reaction to the cigar / cigarette in the dream. For example, if in the dream you feel admonished, the message may be that you ought to give up smoking.

(2) Smoking may be a symptom of anxiety, and this may be the point of the dream. Smoking may also be a substitute form of selfgratification - in which case you need to ask which of your basic needs (e.g. love, sex, recognition or fulfilment in work) is not being satisfied, and why.

(3) A cigar or cigarette may be a sexual (penis) symbol. (Freud acknowledged that his voracious cigar-smoking was possibly a substitute for masturbation.) (On compensation)
