Dream Symbols in The Dream Encyclopedia

by James R. Lewis and Evelyn Dorothy Oliver
Beans often have individual meanings that depend on the dreamer’s personal associations with this particular legume. Beans may, for instance, be tied to memories of being nurtured by one’s mother as a child. From the perspective of traditional psychiatry, beans can symbolize the phallus and fertility. In folklore, there is the story about a magic bean (“Jack and the Beanstalk”) in which a bean plant provided access to a different realm and, ultimately, to wealth. In the ancient world, such as in classical Greece, beans were a sacred food, associated with the underworld, the dead, transmigration, and immortality.

Beans symbolize prosperity; they announce an increase in material goods and conjugal happiness.

Beans were the food that the Greeks sent to the dead and offered to Demeter; but, above all, that which they dedicated to Persephone, wife of Pluto and queen of the underworld for six months. As a consequence of this Greek tradition, beans have a negative meaning of discord and familial arguments.
